We just released our class schedule for May and we are excited about the lineup of classes we have in store, including some new ones! Parent & Me: Butterflies 101 combines our new popular Bug Expedition class with our SOAR – Tropical Butterflies exhibit. It’s truly one everyone should try! If that’s not your cup of tea, take a look at the rest of the schedule below as we are sure you’ll find something that suits your needs.  Classes are a great way to add to your overall Garden experience. Take one with some friends for a fun day out or treat yourself to a solo spring date. And remember to sign up for the class in advance as many of them will sell out!

Mindrop Meditation: Music Hypnosis & Mindful Meditation
11 a.m. – noon May 1, 5, and 29

Welcome to Wellness Wednesdays with Gina Hemmings. Gina is a meditation teacher and hypnotherapist, her work helps people to connect back to themselves, by taking them on meditative visual journeys through the imagination, using sound, nature and positive suggestions for lasting change, healing and growth. Taking you on a deeply relaxing, musical, restorative & hypnotic journey through the subconscious mind – helping to clear old blocks & limiting beliefs, as we replace them with new positive suggestions. Parent & Me: Butterflies 101

10 – 11 a.m. Fridays, May 3, 10, and 24

Calling all junior entomologists to discover and learn about the Tropical Butterflies visiting our SOAR Pavilion! Guests will get an up close and personal guided experience, starting at our Emergence Chamber Window, through our Host and Nectar Garden, and finishing up in our Pavilion with hundreds of tropical butterflies. Kids will create their own identification guide that you can use at South Coast Botanic Garden and even their own backyard! Each child will use a magnifying glass, notebook, pencil, and crayons to record their findings. All supplies needed will be provided. This class will take place in rain or shine! Price includes General Garden Admission, admission into SOAR and the class. All class participants (adults and children) require a ticket. Click here to sign up!

Parent & Me: Bug Expedition Class

Calling all junior entomologists to discover and learn about the bugs in the garden! You will create an identification guide that you can use at South Coast Botanic Garden and even your own backyard! Each child will use a magnifying glass, notebook, pencil, and crayons to record their findings. All supplies needed will be provided. Expedition will take place in rain or shine. Bloom! and Beauty: Flower Crown Making Class 

2 – 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4

Join us for a hands-on workshop where we will create exquisite flower crowns using fresh plant material. Set amidst the colorful surroundings of the Garden, this class offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature while learning the art of flower crown making. Guided by skilled instructors, you will learn the techniques of selecting, preparing, and arranging fresh materials to craft your own stunning flower crown. As you weave together petals, leaves, and delicate blooms, you will discover the therapeutic qualities of working with nature’s vibrant palette and engage in conversations about the significance of flowers in various cultures and the symbolism associated with different blooms. Hummingbird Flights Make Your Own Feeder Using Recycled Wine Bottles – Now with Wine Flights

Get your garden humming with activity by creating the perfect visiting spot for our pollinator friends while enjoying some wine flights! Bring some friends to make your own hummingbird feeder out of recycled wine bottles and learn everything you need to know about maintenance and plant pairings to ensure plenty of visits from this favorite garden-space hummingbird visitor. Creating a Butterfly-Friendly Garden

2 – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25

This class invites both adults and children to come learn how to attract butterflies to your yard with plants and some fun additions. Make and take your own butterfly puddler that you can put in your garden to offer your local butterflies water, minerals and a resting place. Butterflies and other pollinators will thank you by calling your garden “home.” Please bring a recycled 12”-18” sturdy plastic or clay tray to create a butterfly puddler. All other supplies will be provided. This class is recommended for children 5 years and up! Price: $21.60/person for Members, $24/person for non-members (pricing for both kids and adults). Sit & Stay a While: Basic Tips to Socialize Your Pet

1 – 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26

Calling all pet parents! Does your pup love to socialize? Do they have difficulty concentrating on commands in high-traffic areas? This on-leash, public obedience class might be perfect for them, and you! It’s a paw-some opportunity to help dogs of all ages be more comfortable around each other, learn to listen despite distractions, and to get some good bonding time with their owners and new classmates. The health and safety of Garden guests and employees are paramount, and in light of the recent case spike of the new strain of Dog RSV, that includes our four-legged guests as well! If your dog is on the older side, has breathing challenges, or is showing signs of illness, including sneezing and/or wheezing, please consider keeping them at home for the health of all our four-legged friends visiting the Garden.
