Butterfly of the Week: Jazzy Leafwing (Hypna clytemnestra)

Butterfly of the Week: Jazzy Leafwing (Hypna clytemnestra)

This week’s Butterfly of the Week might be kind of hard to find. That’s because the jazzy leafwing is camouflaged to look like a dead leaf when its wings are closed! Make sure to read the other fun facts about the jazzy leafwing butterfly below before visiting them in the butterfly pavilion. And remember,  SOAR-Tropical Butterflies is only open for another week and a half so make sure to visit the pavilion before it closes.

Fun Facts:

  • Jazzy leafwing is the largest member of Anaeini
  • Anaeini is a group of Neotropical butterflies whose wing’s undersides usually mimic dead leaves
  • They can be found from Mexico to the Amazon
  • The jazzy leafwing has a wingspan of 2.75 – 3 inches
  • The uppersides of their wings are black with a few small white spots on the edges and two large vertical white stripes.
