Thomas Dambo’s TROLLS: Save the Humans is headed to the Garden for its West Coast premiere from October 1 through January 14, 2024. These six larger-than-life Trolls are made of reclaimed wood and built by world-renowned recycle artist Thomas Dambo. Like the Garden, these Trolls are on a mission to reconnect us humans to nature. The Trolls have made temporary homes throughout our 87 acres with signage that shares more information about each Troll and the way they connect to nature. Make sure to read all of the information below before making your way to the Garden for this incredible exhibit as our guide includes tips for the best way to enjoy the exhibit and additional classes and activities you won’t want to miss.

Fun Facts about Thomas Dambo’s TROLLS: Save the Humans:

  • Thomas Dambo’s TROLLS: Save the Humans follows the story of six young trolls as they travel around the world helping humans reconnect with nature.
  • This exhibit is actually the next chapter of a bigger fairytale, Thomas Dambo’s: Trail of A Thousand Trolls, which currently consists of over 100 trolls worldwide.
  • The sculptures are primarily made of damaged pallets that are salvaged from local companies. Without Thomas Dambo and his team, these pallets would be burnt rather than reused. They also utilize offcuts from construction companies, manufacturing companies, and big box stores.

Tips and Tricks For Your Visit:

  • Don’t forget to grab a map as you enter the Garden. If you get lost, follow the birdhouses to navigate your way through the Garden and find each Troll.
  • Make sure to begin your journey at Ibbi Pip’s Playhouse, which features over 150 colorful birdhouses hanging from the ceiling and two human-sized nests that make a great photo moment. If you’re sharing your journey on social media, make sure to use #scbgTrolls
  • There is no food and drink allowed inside Ibbi Pip’s Playhouse, but strollers are allowed!
  • Read all signage that is inside and outside the Playhouse to learn more about the Trolls and their mission.
  • Feul up for the journey ahead with a quick bite to eat from Dotties, the Garden’s concession station, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Monday beginning September 30. Talk all things Trolls over a warm cup of coffee, a yummy sandwich, or a delicious salad.
  • Get to know each Troll. Like humans, Trolls have unique personalities. The best way to get to know each Troll and how they connect with nature is to read the sign next to them.
  • Feel free to touch the Trolls! This is an immersive experience, and you are allowed to touch them, we just ask that you do not climb the Trolls as it hurts them!
  • Getting a picture with a Troll might be difficult because of their size so here are our tips for getting the best picture:
    • Find a spot across from the Troll to set your phone or camera on. Make sure it is low to the floor
    • Point your camera up and take a practice shot. Be prepared to use your flash
    • Once you find an angle you like, set a timer on your phone or camera and quickly get in place
    • Or, take turns with another visitor group so you both get the shots you want
    • Share your journey with us by posting to social media using hashtag #scbgTrolls
  • Take a Trolls-inspired class and learn how to grow native plants, recycle paper to make jewlery beads, or create a birdfeeder. To learn more about classes, click here
  • Take a piece of the Trolls’ story home with Thomas Dambo’s book. His book and other Garden merchandise can be found at our Kiosk located in Palm Circle.
