Summer at South Coast Botanic Garden begins on the perfect note—reggae rhythms and legendary vibes—when Survival Band featuring Jah Faith opens the much-anticipated Sunset Series on Thursday, June 5. Set against the Garden’s lush blooms and golden skies, this first concert of the season invites you to unwind, dance and groove to music that is as soulful as it is inspiring.

Fronted by Jah Faith, Survival Band pays homage to Bob Marley’s timeless music while adding original songs to the mix. Inspired by a life-changing encounter with Marley himself in 1978 at a family lunch in Trinidad, Jah Faith has been a devoted ambassador of reggae music ever since. “My performance is always cool, calm, and conscious,” he says—a fitting reflection of reggae’s roots in peace and unity.

With songs like “Rastaman Chant” and “Nyabinghi,” Jah Faith connects deeply to his heritage. “The songs remind me of my own culture,” he shares. And that culture runs rich and deep. Born in Boissiere Village in Trinidad, Jah Faith’s connection to music began early. Known as “The Natural Music Man,” he hears melodies in everything—from household chores to the quiet hum of daily life. For him, “music is all around us, as long as you are willing to listen.”

Though he now lives in Venice, California, Jah Faith carries the spirit of Trinidad and Tobago with him—an island nation famous for its vibrant fusion of African and Indian musical traditions, from steel pan and calypso to soca and chutney. That rhythmic diversity shines in Jah Faith’s groove, which he describes simply as “the tempo and the groove” that drew him to reggae in the first place.

With nine years in Survival Band and shows with thousands of fans under his belt, Jah Faith brings not just talent, but heart, wisdom and soul to every performance.
