For Information Seekers

Betty Gold was born in Austin, Texas, in 1935. At the time of this writing, she was splitting her time living in both Venice, Calif., and New Mexico. She majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Art History and was a sculptor’s apprentice. She has traveled the world extensively to study and lecture, and lived in Spain for quite some time. Spain has significant meaning to this piece since it was inspired by the town of Sóller on the island of Mallorca. Before building her structures, her website says she always begins by folding a piece of paper. “I create a flat, rectangular structure, deconstruct the parts and reassemble them into the whole, then create a set of drawings and geometric models based on the linear geometry of rotating movement,” she says in a statement on her website. Outside of being a sculptor, she also does painting, drawing, silk screening, tapestry and jewelry design.
