For Information Seekers
Richard Artschwager was born in 1923 in Washington, DC. His mother was also an artist and a designer, helping foster Artschwager’s love of art. He studied chemistry and mathematics at Cornell University and later graduated with a B.A. in physics. In the early 1950s, he was a carpenter, creating simple pieces of furniture to help support his family. In 1960, the Catholic Church commissioned him to build portable altars for ships, which led him to play on the utilitarianism of tables, chairs and cabinets with his artwork. Artschwager was based in New York and was associated with Pop, Optical, Minimalist, and Conceptual Art at different times in his career. Artschwager freely traversed classifications to create his unique blend of humorous, inventive work.
