A work of sculpture on view at South Coast Botanic Garden

Artist and architect, Doris Sung, has unveiled her newest creation – Fuller, a stunning geodesic sphere commissioned especially for South Coast Botanic Garden. The work is an experiment by the artist to demonstrate the structural value of a smart building material – thermobimetal. Sung uses such material innovatively on building facades and windows to reduce energy use. The material curls in reaction to the sun’s heat, providing interior shade.

The title, Fuller, is a nod to architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller and his popularization of the geodesic sphere.

Fuller was supported generously by Garden Trustee Marilyn Long and the Long Family Foundation.
Fuller was produced by DOSU Studio Architecture, with Elizabeth Phillips, Adelfrid Ramirez, Homie Chen, Eric Morris. Additional support was provided by Neal Feay Company and City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
