You’re going to have to look extra closely to see our new Butterfly of the Week! The glasswing butterlfy (Greta oto) has wings that are mostly see-through, making them difficult to spot. Butterfly wings are made up of millions of tiny, colorful scales but for the glasswing butterfly, some of those scales are see-through.   • Despite being a common trait for aquatic animals, transparency is very rare in land animals.
  • Transparent wings make it difficult to see and helps protect the butterflies from predators.
  • The glasswing butterfly is native to Central to South America.
  • Their host plants are the passion flower 
  • Their wingspan is 1.1 – 1.2 inches wide.
