A tree that may reach 25 to 45 feet high and 15 to 60 feet wide that has a trunk with rough, dark brown persistent bark.
The leaves are glossy dark green and broadly lanceolate bearing a prominent midrib. The flowers range in color from cream-white through pink to salmon and dark red. This is a good drought hardy tree that is also cold tolerant. It is often planted as a street tree in milder areas of the Los Angeles area. Photos by Laurel Woodley
