The Nature Connects Finale — A groovy Silent Disco party in the Garden

Everything is “groovy!”

On the final weekend of the Nature Connects exhibit, we celebrated the event’s great success with a groovy Silent Disco party. Garden guests and staff danced and reveled together among the flora and exhibit displays well into the spring evening. And we all raised a glass to bring the event to a triumphant close for the season.

As a special ‘Thank you!’ we took the Garden back to the 70’s! Guests dug up their flower crowns, platform shoes, bell-bottoms and more to get down with the boogie! The theme: Everything is “Groovy”. Can ya dig it?

Our generous sponsors provided craft beer from El Segundo Brewing Company, wine from Cuatro Dias Winery and appetizers from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit and Country Garden Caterers.

And as the Main Event, VOX Djs provided “Feel tha Funk” music and dancing with a Silent Disco. Dance floor and event rentals by Choura Events. Event production and styling by The Events Boutique.

Admission included: appetizers, beverages, Silent Disco dancing and special Nature Connects nighttime viewing.

A special thanks to our Silent Disco party participants and sponsors:

Fun in the Garden with LEGO bricks

Nature ConnectsImagine a walk through a beautiful garden where you round a corner and come face-to-face with a bison! Not a real one, of course, but one entirely constructed from 45,143 LEGO® bricks.  Families will be able to enjoy a toy-filled exploration this spring at the South Coast Botanic Garden, which will host an exciting family-friendly ecosystem of fun, flowers and fauna: Nature Connects. This interactive art installation entirely constructed from nearly half a million toy bricks will bring 27 nature-themed sculptures to the Garden, along with multiple hands on activities.

There’s a buzz in the air at SCBG

The South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Peninsula was the only Southern California stop for this nationally touring exhibit, unveiled to the public on February 19 and on display through May 8, 2016.

“We are the first botanic garden in Southern California to offer this one-of-a-kind and engaging artistic vision, representing a whole new way to experience nature through art. In bringing Nature Connects to South Coast Botanic Garden, we hope to share the importance of making connections with the natural world. More importantly, with the garden’s commitment to providing a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience, we want to demonstrate successful land reclamation and sustainability through the familiarity of LEGO toy bricks,” said South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation CEO Adrienne Nakashima.

The sculptures, created by New York based artist, Sean Kenney, took seven months to build. The pieces are all incredibly detailed and assembled exclusively using the popular connecting toys. They range from a 575-piece statue of a goldfinch to a hummingbird, the symbol of the South Coast Botanic Garden, which requires 31,555 pieces and stands more than six feet tall.

Membership allows entry into the garden 364 days a year along with other exclusive perks including free parking, special members-only events and discounts. Membership covers access to this exhibition as well as admission to the Garden all year long and other benefits.

Any creation begins with a vision. From humble beginnings to the grandest of visions, South Coast Botanic Garden and its tremendous vision plan incorporate a unique history to bridge the gap from the past into the future, and you can be a part of it! Individuals or teams of Builders are invited to journey into the future by helping to realize the vision of a world-class Garden and its impact on the community through their own creative minds.

Challenge:

Mini (ages 6 – 9) and Junior (ages 10 – 13) Builder Divisions – Ecology is the study of how all living things are interconnected. Builders should create a scene or objects that represent interconnected relationships within the Garden. This can include humans, plants or animals; a few objects or several.

Young (ages 14 – 17) and Open (ages 18+) Builder Divisions – Nature and humans have been intertwined for hundreds of thousands of years. As we look towards the future, we often depend on the best and brightest young minds to blaze the trail. Builders should create a scene or sculpture reflecting how nature and humans will interact in the future.

Builders should be as imaginative as possible! All entries will be judged on originality, creativity and presentation aesthetics. Be sure to check out our website or stop by the Garden for inspiration! For more information, please see Official Rules.
