Shaggy Mane

A white mushroom that changes from a cylindrical shape when emerging to an expanded cap that liquefies along the margins as the spores mature.  The common name for the family is Inky Cap.  Eventually all that will be visible is the white stalk protruding from the soil.  This apparently fragile mushroom has the remarkable ability to push through asphalt.  Photos by Laurel Woodley.
