    We are pleased to offer this exclusive opportunity through a program at the Torrance Memorial Learning Garden. Participants can learn how to grow an edible garden and actually work in a garden plot. This year-round program features formal classes/lectures, work days, and much more. In addition to these more formal classes, there are ongoing “work” days that include hands-on instruction in topics such as plant selection, soil preparation, fertilizing, natural pest control, irrigation, general garden maintenance, and harvesting/deadheading. Class is limited to six participants for daytime classes only.

  • Small Space Vegetable Gardening - Summer 2013

    $25 members / $35 non-members

    Instructor: Judith Gerber

    If you can provide three basics: sun, water, and great soil, you can grow your own vegetables regardless of how much space you have. Come and learn how to grow edibles in a small space using easy space saving tricks including vertical and container gardening, raised beds, and the best varieties for limited space. We will also discussplant selection, basic soil preparation, plant location (including water, sun, and climate requirements), and gardening resources.

  • Creating a Fall Edible Garden - Summer 2013 (Series Begins August 10 - NEW START DATE AND END TIME)

    This four-week course will provide you with all the information you need to grow a cool-season edible garden including fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We will discuss plant selection, plant schedules, planting from seed and starter plants, basic soil preparation, water, sun and climate requirements, harvesting, and gardening resources. We will also discuss various approaches to edible gardening including raised beds, container gardening, and in ground directly. Organic gardening practices will be encouraged.

  • One Stroke Painting - Summer 2013 (Series Begins June 20)

    Instructor: Teri Richards, Multi Certified One Stroke Art Instructor, Artistic Machine Quilting Instructor.

    No previous painting experience required. Teri's desire is to bring to as many as possible the joy and satisfaction of creating their own objects of art in beautiful color. She instructs students in proper stroke technique to create beautiful, functional items for the home and garden, as well as gifts and items to sell at local fairs and boutiques. Surfaces include canvas, porcelain, wood, metal, glass, and fabrics such as silk, microfiber, and floor cloth.     Learn to create paintings of nature that capture the softly colored art form that is expressed in the teachings and techniques of instructor Hisako Asano.     Elegance, grace, and style are the characteristics of Ikebana. Learn the mechanics of manipulation and the observation of materials for their best usage in gaining an oriental view of flower arranging. Elementary, Moribana, Free Style, Hanami, Rimpa, and Bunjin will be taught.
