    Desert Accent Plants for the Southern California Garden

    Speakers:  Paul Ortega and SCBG Superintendent Tanya Finney

     Paul Ortega is a native Californian who has resided in Palm Springs since 2001.  He was drawn to the Palm Spring area to pursue his dream of opening a retail nursery specializing in desert and desert-adapted plants.  After studying at College of the Desert and Living Desert University he worked at the nursery at The Living Desert.  Paul has since developed his nursery: Desert Garden Center, LLC.  He also teaches at Living Desert University, does guest speaking throughout southern California, is co-founder and current chair of the Desert Horticultural Society.

    After Paul speaks, SCBG Superintendent, Tanya Finney will speak about our Desert Garden and lead a tour to see the garden and the new Display Greenhouse.

  • Geranium Society Lecture

    Location:

    Ideal for garden borders and beds, pelargonium are easy to propagate.  Preferring full sun they flower from spring through summer.  Learn about the various species of geranium and their close cousin pelargonium.  Lecture will be taught by members of the geranium society, so the experts will be on hand to answer any questions you have about this popular house and garden plant.  Lecture is included with paid garden admission.

    The 19th annual Model Train show at the garden. Sponsored by the Los Angeles Division of the National Model Railroad Association. The finest modular clubs will be represented. Tracks will be set up in the Hall as well as the Cactus Garden. This show is popular for all ages.

    Dr. Matt Ritter’s presentation will be a photographic exposé of the lives and stories of some of the fascinating trees featured in his new book “A Californian's Guide to the Trees Among Us”—a new natural history and identification guide to urban and suburban trees in California.  Those who live in California need not travel to exotic places to see an eclectic mix of trees from all corners of the earth; one only need stroll down a local street and look up. The state's agreeable Mediterranean climate and rich horticultural history have converged to populate our towns and cities with thousands of different species of native and ornamental trees. Matt will use his photographs, insight, and humor to share stories, cultivation and identification tips, and natural history of California's common and exotic trees.
