  • Small Space Vegetable Gardening - Summer 2013

    Instructor: Judith Gerber

    If you can provide three basics: sun, water, and great soil, you can grow your own vegetables regardless of how much space you have. Come and learn how to grow edibles in a small space using easy space saving tricks including vertical and container gardening, raised beds, and the best varieties for limited space. We will also discussplant selection, basic soil preparation, plant location (including water, sun, and climate requirements), and gardening resources.

    We are pleased to offer this exclusive opportunity through a program at the Torrance Memorial Learning Garden. Participants can learn how to grow an edible garden and actually work in a garden plot. This year-round program features formal classes/lectures, work days, and much more. In addition to these more formal classes, there are ongoing “work” days that include hands-on instruction in topics such as plant selection, soil preparation, fertilizing, natural pest control, irrigation, general garden maintenance, and harvesting/deadheading. Class is limited to six participants for daytime classes only.

    This four-week course will provide you with all the information you need to grow a cool-season edible garden including fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We will discuss plant selection, plant schedules, planting from seed and starter plants, basic soil preparation, water, sun and climate requirements, harvesting, and gardening resources. We will also discuss various approaches to edible gardening including raised beds, container gardening, and in ground directly. Organic gardening practices will be encouraged.

  • Geranium Propagation Workshop

    Location: 
    classrooma

    Ideal for garden borders and beds, pelargonium are easy to propagate. Preferring full sun they flower from spring through summer. Learn about the various species of geranium and their close cousin pelargonium. Cuttings will be supplied as well as pot and soil and instructions for planting. Knowledgeable society members will be on hand to answer any questions you have about this popular house and garden plant.

  • Volunteer Docent Training- Fall 2013 (Series Begins Sept. 16)

    The five-week training session for new volunteers who are interested in learning more about the Garden and volunteering as Docents begins in September. Each week you will learn about a different area of the Garden, the history of the Garden site, as well as tools and techniques for leading tours for school children as well as adults. New potential docents welcome at meetings and must attend all training meetings.Call Vicky Huynh at 310-544-1508 to RSVP and for information and the training schedule.
