40+ years of combined birding experience in conducting and documenting sightings.

Are you interested in birds? Join the Palos Verdes/South Bay Audubon Society as they tour the Garden in search of birds. Bird walks are a great way to learn to identify birds. No experience is required, but binoculars are recommended. The group meets in the Courtyard and then heads out into the Garden. Please arrive punctually should you wish to join the group. Binoculars, water and sunscreen are  recommended. Binoculars can be purchased at Wild Birds Unlimited in Torrance.

Members Only – No Charge for Garden Walks. Limited to 25 participants

Members may invite one (1) non-member guest. RSVPs are required for all participants. Registration for walk opens two weeks prior to walk and is limited to 25 participants. Walk will be led by Garden staff. 

Our first walk of the year will cover the various groves and tree collections of the Garden. We will see the Banyan grove, Conifer collection, Magnolia collection, and the Redwood grove. A refreshment stop will be included halfway through the walk. Dress accordingly for the weather and bring along water and binoculars if you wish. Meet in the Courtyard at 5:00 pm to begin the walk.

Julie James: Owner and Director of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, UCCE Master Gardener and Certified Herbalist

This class will focus on caring for dogs and cats though other animals may be discussed as required. Herbal treatments for disease as well as prevention and general care for various afflictions will be discussed. Julie will take students through the pros and cons of raw and other diets, basic recipes for homemade pet food and guidelines for improving nutrition using commercial food. Additional subjects include herbal/floral essence blend tutorials and nutrition for improving immune health, skin and coat, digestion, joints and more! Students will take home recipes and ideas for supporting the health of your fuzzy kids, plus samples of herbal medicines to put that information to use immediately!

Andrew Anderson: Owner and Operator of The Urban Farmer landscape design company

Andrew will take guests through creating and adding butterfly-friendly plants to your garden. Plants used to help several varieties of butterflies flourish along with specific plants caterpillars need to grow will be available for sale and incorporation to your own garden from Ricardo’s Nursery. In a time when butterfly populations are dwindling, their ability to pollinate our food sources and flowers depends on their available food sources. You can help butterflies thrive while enjoying a butterfly sanctuary in your own backyard.

Kit Wertz and Casey Schwartz: Custom Wedding/Event Florists and Floral Design Instructors, Kit and Casey are a sister team. They own and operate Flower Duet with over 20 years of professional experience.

Learn how to create a fabulous composition of fresh flowers using a collection of hot shades including fuchsia, red, orange and cool blue in a vase. Flower Duet will show students how to design in a vase using the tricks of the floral trade. All supplies included. Students will take home their designs.
