  • Oriental Impressionistic Watercolor

    Learn to create paintings of nature that capture the softly colored art form that is expressed in the teachings and techniques of instructor Hisako Asano.  You will learn to mix and blend colors and manipulate 3-D values with a single stroke. 

    Material list:  

    One 1.5" Hake brush (made in Japan)
    Strathmore 300 series watercolor paper
    Water container
    Paper towels
    Watercolor palette
    Tube of transparent watercolors in the following colors:

    • Alizarin Crimson (red)
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Lemon Yellow
    • Indigo (dark Blue)
    • Prussian Blue
    • Sap Green or Olive Green

  • Tending Words - Summer: The Season of Abundance

  • Hypertufa Container Workshop - Create a Rustic Planter!

    Learn to make a hupertufa planter.  Hypertufa pots and planters are an easy-to-make alternative to heavy concrete or stone planters, and they have the appearance of rough concrete.  Each student till take home a planter.

    Material list: 
     

    • One 5-gallon container - (you can share with a friend)
    • Trowel or scoop
    • Plastic drop cloth - painters drop cloth for working and wrapping your project
    • Small plastic container (2 - 4 qt) for form.  A shallow bowl will work well.  The container should not have a lip or ridge on the edge
    • Container for measuring - any size bigger than one cup
    • Kitchen/Household gloves - sturdy ones, such as Playtex.  No vinyl or surgical gloves

    One kit (hypertufa material) will be provided to each student.  Additional kits will be available for $4 each

  • One Stroke Painting Workshop

    Instructor:  Theresa Blanchard, Certified One-Stroke Painting teacher

    One-Stroke Painting is a technique created by Donna Dewberry.  This decorative painting technique concentrates on loading the brush instead of traditional theories of light and dark.  In this workshop your project will be painting a decorative design on a wood frame double glass-pane window.  Window frames measure 28” x 36”.   Please bring paper plate, water basin, paper towels, and brushes (Plaid Enamel value pack).  Materials provided include window and paints chain and hooks for hanging window.  Limited to 20 students/windows.  Pre-registration required.  ** Instructor will have some brushes sets available to purchase.  $21 for pack of brushes payable to instructor.

  • Photo Walks in the Garden - FREE INTRO

    Join us for this lecture introducing the new, upcoming fine-art photography and camera courses.  Ms. Balcom will give a presentation highlighting concepts and provide a brief overview of good photo opportunities in the Garden.  Participants can bring one .jpg image on a flash drive (optional) for improvement suggestions by instructor!   • Summer Photo Walks & Critique in the Garden

    Capture the beauty of the Garden.  Relaxed walks with photo coaching and easy assignments are followed by classroom evaluation and PowerPoint instruction.  Class critique includes brief reminders on composition and lighting.  All skill levels, any camera (digital or film, automatic or adjustable).  Bring camera and manual to first class. 

    Five meetings:  Three classroom lectures and critique plus two day outings in the Garden.

  • Flavored Vinegar Workshop - NEW!

    Instructor:  Connie Vadheim, Adj. Professor of Biology, CSUDH

    In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the use of leaves, flowers and berries of popular Southern California native plants to enhance the flavor of cooking vinegars and make one-of-a-kind ingredients for the gourmet kitchen.

    The workshop will include a presentation on specific Southern California native plants, a focused garden walk, tasting of different flavored vinegars and actual demonstration of basic recipes. Each participant will prepare one bottle of flavored vinegar to take home.

    Class fee includes materials to make flavored vinegar.
